Choosing the right shoes and clothing on an extended road trip is important. Space is a premium – so you’ll want to bring items that can do double or triple duty.
Here’s my criteria for a good road trip boot:
- Easy on and off
- Waterproof
- Warm, but not too warm
- Comfortable
Keen’s Elsa Chelsea boot fit the bill! I wore these during a month long winter road trip through the southwest.
These slip on waterproof boots are insulated with 100g KEEN.WARM insulation. They’re stylish and take up less room than my old “duck boots.”
The wool cuff kept my ankles warm, even when I post-holed in knee deep snow. I was wearing ski pants over them to keep most of the snow out.
When we walked through melting snow and puddles, my feet stayed dry (I’m looking at you, ski resort parking lots). They’d also be a great cool weather rain boot.
The boots slip on and off easily – an important road trip criteria. I always switch to my Birkenstock sandals if we’ll be back in the car for a while. They also have CLEANSPORT NXT for natural odor control. No more complaining from road trip partners about smelly shoes in the car! If we stopped for a quick picture, dog walk or a gas station fill up, I just slipped these boots back on in a flash.
They’re comfortable enough for short hikes. I wore them on several walks that were around 2 miles. They don’t provide much ankle support, so I personally wouldn’t wear them on longer hikes that had any rugged terrain. The boots feature non-marking rubber outsoles with decent tread.
The fit is true to size. I usually wear a 9 and a 9 fit perfect. I’m able to fit some of my thicker socks on with them comfortably. I didn’t find the need to wear thicker socks with them to stay warm – my regular hiking socks were just fine.

I have a pair of their hiking boots and a pair of hiking shoes. They have a wide toe box, which I love.
